Inspired by Murnau, director Frank Borzage devised several variations on the crossing-the-street shot. Here, the camera follows Paul and Irene across the street as they approach an advertisement for a trip to Tahiti. As in the traveling-matte shot from Sunrise (see 1.10), an image of urban danger gives way to an illusory image of escape.
