Although the cuts enforce rigid segregation between the two crowds, with whites massed together in one shot and African Americans massed in another, the flowing movement across the cut hints at the forbidden idea that they might be linked together. Indeed, we later learn that one of the performers is of mixed race. Compare this sequence to 3.9.
