The shot’s seriality, revealing one cross after another, gestures to the vastness of the camp’s crimes, as if the series could extend forever. And yet the film visually represents its own failure to grasp this vastness. As the camera dollies to the left, it angles to the right, framing a comprehensive view that could take in all or most of the crosses. But the space is increasingly enshrouded in fog, preventing us from seeing all seven crosses at once.
