Jenny walks through a makeshift camp set up for displaced survivors of the quake. The camera dollies backward, preceding Jenny as she walks ahead; when she turns her head to the left, the camera pans to show a group of African Americans gathered by a tent and then pans back to pick up Jenny as she continues through the camp. We have seen the earthquake level buildings, but here the impact of the catastrophe is represented as a different kind of leveling, destroying distinctions of race and class.
