3.16 The Clock

In the farewell scene, the camera moves past a series of vignettes before discovering the central couple. As in a neorealist film, the effect is to suggest that the film’s story has been selected at random. The camera could follow this couple or that one. Each story would be just as ordinary as this one—and just as important.
