With the camera strapped to his chest, cinematographer Karl Freund circled around Emil Jannings to show the astonished faces of the imagined onlookers. The effect is semi-subjective: we observe the porter from the outside, even as the bumpy camerawork assures us that we are looking inside his drunken dreams.
