1.6 Variety

Cinematographer Karl Freund attaches the camera to a swing, producing a semi-subjective effect similar to the rotating platform shot from The Last Laugh (see 1.5). Huller appears to be perfectly still, but we see the two lovers oscillating up and down behind him. The resulting image expresses turmoil (by creating the dizzying effect of oscillation) and obsession (by showing the image of the two lovers passing through the center of the frame again and again).
