Long takes allowed director John Farrow to cover the entire script in only 183 setups. The crew executed less than five set-ups per day, but they managed to complete the film roughly on schedule. Cinematographer John F. Seitz even had time to devise a new lighting scheme for the film, relying on overhead reflected light to minimize the risk of the camera recording its own shadow.
