Ariel Rogers has argued that widescreen systems “offered moviegoers an experience portrayed as both empowering and overpowering.” In part a claim about the sheer size of the image, this argument also applies to the spectacular forward-moving shot. On the one hand, the technique empowers spectators by giving them the thrilling experience of flying through the air. On the other hand, the technique imposes itself on spectators, forcing them to experience vertiginous jolts whether they like them or not.
