When Frank discovers that he has been poisoned, he runs outside the medical building and sprints through the street of San Francisco. The camera follows him from a camera car, zipping through the streets at astonishing speed. Far from looking like a documentary, the sequence shifts into the semi-subjective mode, using a burst of bewildering movement to express the protagonist’s confusion as he faces an inexplicable threat in the middle of an unfamiliar city.
