Because John Huston arrived in San Pietro as the fighting was ending, he staged most of the film’s battle footage. According to Mark Harris, the film contained very little unreconstructed documentation, but the chaotic handheld camerawork created such a powerful impression that reviewers described Huston’s film as the most realistic war documentary yet made.
