Initially framing a long shot of Lucia on the second floor, the camera cranes down, moving closer and closer to Lucia until it arrives at the final composition: the protagonist, behind the banister, turning away from her family and away from the camera. The social world imprisons Lucia by forcing her to conform to postwar norms of suburban motherhood.
