Diffusion presented a challenging technical problem. Most cinematographers photographed long shots with little or no diffusion, while employing heavier diffusion on the close shots, especially of women. What if the camera had to dolly from long shot to close-up? Rouben Mamoulian’s film Queen Christina ends with such a shot; his crew employed a long piece of sliding glass to introduce the diffusion gradually over the course of the approach.
