The Dynamic Frame: Camera Movement in Classical Hollywood

2.x17 Grand Hotel

When a climactic murder is reported, the film cuts to a high-angle view of the telephone operators, and the camera cranes downward. Then the film cuts to another high-angle view of the hotel lobby, and the camera cranes upward. The fact that the two cranes are not simple follow shots increases their effectiveness. A follow shot keeps a walking subject locked in the center of the frame. A dynamic crane shot is more intense because it puts the entire frame in motion.
