The Dynamic Frame: Camera Movement in Classical Hollywood

Intro.6 Sunset Blvd

Joe ascends the stairs, and the camera vaults upward, revealing a dried-out swimming pool. The upward movement expresses a sense of grandeur while exposing the reality of decay. The timing aligns our knowledge with Joe's--but not perfectly. Recall that Joe is narrating this story from beyond the grave. When the camera cranes up to reveal the pool, we know already that Joe is destined to die in that pool; the Joe depicted onscreen does not.
