The Dynamic Frame: Camera Movement in Classical Hollywood

Intro.5 Sunset Blvd

In the previous two examples (3 and 4), the pattern of disclosures echoed Joe's experiences. The pan revealed the old car when Joe noticed it, just as the tilt revealed Norma's presence when Joe turned to look at her. Here, the camera's movement is detached from Joe's: he walks away from Norma, but the camera moves in. Hollywood parlance might describe the shot as "unmotivated," but it serves a clear purpose, drawing our attention to a detail the protagonist has overlooked.
