The Dynamic Frame: Camera Movement in Classical Hollywood

6.x7 The Big Clock

The shooting script for The Big Clock called for 255 setups. Long takes allowed director John Farrow to cover the entire script in only 183 setups. The crew executed less than five set-ups per day, but they managed to complete the film roughly on schedule. Cinematographer John F. Seitz even had time to devise a new lighting scheme for the film, relying on overhead reflected light to minimize the risk of the camera recording its own shadow.
