The Dynamic Frame: Camera Movement in Classical Hollywood

6.x23 Oklahoma!

The action scene with Jud’s runaway horses repeats the framing from an earlier scene (6.x22), suspending the camera underneath the carriage. The repetition asks us to compare the two sensory experiences—the lightly amusing experience of driving through a gaggle of geese and the terrifying experience of being dragged by runaway horses through a puddle of water. In so doing, the film asks us to compare the two narrative situations—Laurey’s imagined delight with Curly versus her actual fear of Jud.
