5.x22 A Walk in the Sun

The climactic scene shows U.S. soldiers attacking a nest of machine guns in a country house. Instead of using a handheld camera to produce the effect of chaos, Milestone builds intensity through patterns of contrast, cutting back and forth between stationary shots of the firing machine guns and lateral dolly shots of the soldiers falling to the ground. Fifteen years earlier, Milestone had used the same technique in All Quiet on the Western Front (see 3.5).
