The Dynamic Frame: Camera Movement in Classical Hollywood

5.x19 Air Force

Cinematographer James Wong Howe defined “documentary technique” in negative terms, noting that the documentarian seeks to avoid many of the flourishes that characterized the Hollywood A-film: no glamour, no unmotivated lighting effects, and “no unnecessary dollies, or panning, or other artificial movement.” In this scene, Howe’s camerawork is steady and balanced. Compare to the aggressive handheld work in 5.12.
