The Dynamic Frame: Camera Movement in Classical Hollywood

5.x13 To Have and Have Not

George M. Wilson has proposed the term “restricted authority” to make sense of films such as To Have and Have Not. The film does not get inside the protagonist’s head, but it does adhere to an internal norm, showing events only as Bogart’s character encounters them. This narrowly focused approach stands in contrast to the unrestricted mode of many Hollywood films, whereby the movie remains free to show whatever “dramatic effectiveness” demands.
