As David Bordwell explains, a film with a restricted range may follow a single character from scene to scene, thereby limiting the film’s revelations to the character’s range of awareness. In this scene, we learn the clues as Philip Marlowe learns them. Note that range is not the same as depth: the camera stays close to Marlowe, but it does not adopt his subjective point of view.
