The Dynamic Frame: Camera Movement in Classical Hollywood

5.5 Ride the Pink Horse

Technically, this three-minute shot is as impressive as anything in Lady in the Lake, also directed by Robert Montgomery. Starting in the bright outdoor sun, the camera dollies inside the station, and the aperture opens up, allowing us to see the dim interior. Once inside, the camera pans around 180 degrees to show the protagonist standing in front of the entrance; then it reverses its movements, ending up back outside in the sun.
