Mark Hellinger’s narration may be omniscient, but the spectator is not; the scene instills a feeling of uncertainty rather than mastery. To watch this shot is to be overwhelmed with detail: Garzah, yes, but also the man in sunglasses, the Old Gold poster, the woman with the baby carriage, the short man in an oversize suit, the woman with the white purse and the matching shoes, the carefully lettered sign of the delicatessen, and the man taking a huge bite out of an ear of corn.
