The Dynamic Frame: Camera Movement in Classical Hollywood

4.x7 Citizen Kane

Many of the film’s most virtuosic shots were executed with a combination of camera movement and special effects, amplifying the camera’s seemingly magical powers. As the first opera performance begins, the camera climbs up to reveal two stagehands passing judgment on Susan’s execrable singing. A crane executed the movements at the beginning and end of the shot; Linwood Dunn executed the middle portion on his optical printer.
