The long take heightens our awareness of time as Lucy determinedly maintains her cordial facade for several minutes. When RKO recut the film, editor Robert Wise preserved most of Welles’s long take, but he inserted one ill-fitting close-up of Anne Baxter holding back tears as George walks away. For many critics, the extra shot cheapens an otherwise brilliant scene.
