The Dynamic Frame: Camera Movement in Classical Hollywood

4.x2 Johnny Eager

Director Mervyn LeRoy and his crew stretched the idea of the fluid master to the breaking point, adding so much blocking (into the room, to the couch, toward the bar, to the door) that it would have been nearly impossible to capture all of it in a single shot. Instead, they broke the scene down into smaller units. Each unit became a miniature master-and-coverage scene, with a two-shot and a shot-reverse-shot pair; the filmmakers then laced the scenes together with follow shots as the actors moved from position to position.
