The Dynamic Frame: Camera Movement in Classical Hollywood

4.1 The Maltese Falcon

Spade walks with brisk confidence, whereas Wilmer, a wannabe tough guy, follows along more slowly. The camera moves relatively quickly—but not quickly enough to keep up with Spade, who steps closer to the camera before exiting the frame entirely. By contrast, the camera has no trouble holding the slow-moving Wilmer in the center of the frame. In a neat irony, the man who is being watched escapes our gaze, while the man doing the watching proves easy to target.
