Later, an elephant crosses the frame! As in the previous example (2.x15), the staging is absurdly complicated, but the degree of dramatic justification is much higher here. Therese’s surprise arrival is the crucial turning point in the story. The camera participates in Therese’s bewilderment, as if it were spinning around dizzily and discovering an unfamiliar space.
