Early in the film, director Tay Garnett and cinematographer Lucien Andriot stage an audacious three-minute-long take. Camera reports indicate that this single shot took more than a day to stage, rehearse, and execute. Unfortunately, the camerawork does little to amplify the scene’s dramatic progression. Writing in American Cinematographer, William Stull criticized the pointless flamboyance of the film’s technique.
