The Dynamic Frame: Camera Movement in Classical Hollywood

2.17 His Girl Friday

Compare this example with the previous one, from an earlier version of the same story (see 2.16). The Front Page’s Walter is a scoundrel, so single-minded that he barely acknowledges his colleagues; His Girl Friday’s Hildy is more congenial but no less confident. When the film cuts to a moving point-of-view shot, a subtle pan keeps the figures at the center of the frame for a brief moment, just enough to suggest that Hildy acknowledges her colleagues with friendly respect, but not so long as to suggest that she is anything less than focused on her goal.
