The old porter dreams of having superhuman strength, tossing a suitcase with one hand. With the camera strapped to his chest, cinematographer Karl Freund circled around Emil Jannings to show the astonished faces of the imagined onlookers. The effect is semi-subjective: we observe the porter from the outside, even as the bumpy camerawork assures us that we are looking inside his drunken dreams.
