Some late-silent films featured one-off techniques, not intended for repeated studio use. In William Wyler’s The Shakedown, a camera attached to an industrial crane looks down on the protagonist as he rides the hoist to the top of an oil derrick; the result recalls the trapeze shots from Dupont’s Variety (see 1.6).
